Transform carbon ore and iron ingots into steel ingots to unlock higher-quality schematics.

Although copper ore and even iron ore are abundant once you reach Vermillius Gap in Dune: Awakening, carbon ore is not something you'll typically find by chance. Instead, you’ll need to intentionally travel further afield. If your approach has been simply wandering the second region and hoping for luck, you're unlikely to succeed.

In this guide, I'll detail exactly where to locate carbon ore deposits, so you can begin processing them into steel ingots. Remember, steel ingots require both carbon ore and iron ingots, so ensure you're collecting and refining iron as you explore.

Where to find carbon ore in Dune: Awakening

You'll discover carbon ore nodes near the drum sand in southern Jabal Eifrit Al-janub, as well as in the hills close to the border with Hagga Rift. Jabal Eifrit Al-janub lies just north of The Anvil Tradepost, making it an ideal fast-travel spot for carbon collection—assuming you've already visited it once.

Similar to Erythrite Crystals, located further east in Hagga Rift, mining carbon ore requires at least a MK.2 Cutteray.

Carbon Ore tends to appear in a belt surrounding the southern cliffs near the open dunes, so circle the perimeter and watch carefully for white chunks protruding from rocks.

It's less plentiful than copper or iron, so thorough searching is essential. Additionally, the region hosts numerous enemy outposts, making it advisable to wear proper armor rather than a Stillsuit.

Once you've collected carbon ore, use a Small Ore Refinery to convert four carbon ore and one iron ingot (yes, already refined iron) into a single steel ingot.

💡
Minor Tip: There are more advanced ore refineries you can unlock in the Research Tree which are more efficient and require less ore to make the same resulting ingot. They are worth crafting as they can save a lot of ore over time, especially if you plan on doing a lot of crafting.

Given the considerable amount of carbon and refined iron ore needed, making steel ingots in bulk can be both costly and time-intensive. Nonetheless, the effort pays off, as obtaining steel unlocks the next tier of gear quality, enabling you to craft MK.3 tools, advanced gear, and other beneficial equipment.

💡
The Road Ahead: Once you’ve crafted enough Steel, you should prioritize making a Buggy and a vehicle Cutteray capable of mining the level of ore you need. The Buggy has a massive storage space and can mine hundreds of units of ore at a time. You won’t have to mine ore by hand again unless the Buggy’s equipment can’t handle it.
It's highly recommended you craft a Buggy with a mounted Cutteray ASAP. It can mine and store ore and stone far more efficiently than doing it by hand. (Image credit: Funcom)
